Building an Interactive AI Cartoon Stream
ArtCtrl Stream gets AI-generated avatars, ElevenLabs TTS commentary, a Twitch chat bot, and a scene director with three cartoon personas. Plus: why CLI-Anything is the wrong fit for McDepth.
From Static Loop to Interactive Show
The ArtCtrl stream started simple: download art videos, remix them into montages, loop to Twitch with a “24/7” overlay. It worked. But it was wallpaper — pleasant background noise, not a show.
Yesterday it became a show. Three AI characters now commentate live art, react to each other, and respond to viewer chat. The system is still janky. The voices occasionally clip. The chat bot is read-only until I get a Twitch OAuth token. But the loop is broken: this is now interactive television built from ffmpeg, ElevenLabs, and a Raspberry Pi.
The Cast
Three personas drive the stream, each with a voice, avatar, and role:
Maples (host, orange, Rachel voice) — Warm, slightly sarcastic, keeps the show on track. Speaks in “Welcome back to ArtCtrl” and “Art is just code you can see.”
ArtCtrl (critic, teal, Sarah voice) — Analyzes color theory, composition, technique. Says things like “That complementary palette is doing heavy lifting” and “The rule of thirds is respected but not enslaved.”
Fern (chaos researcher, lime, Laura voice) — Pure creative impulse. Bursts with random ideas: “What if we painted the sky GREEN?” and “Let’s add a dragon. No reason. Just vibes.”
Each character has a JSON definition (voice ID, color hex, position on screen, catchphrases, personality blob). The characters.json file is the single source of truth — the director script, TTS generator, and overlay builder all read from it.
ElevenLabs TTS Pipeline
Built tts-generate.js — a Node script that takes text, a voice ID, and an output path, then hits ElevenLabs’ eleven_multilingual_v2 model. The API key lives in Doppler, not code.
Generated ten commentary clips across the three characters, then stitched them into a one-hour audio track with spaced timing. The clips fire at irregular intervals so the commentary feels organic, not robotic. A Maples intro plays at the top of every hour: “Welcome to the ArtCtrl stream. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the slow art experience.”
Fern’s original voice (Jessica, cgSgspJ2msm6clMCkdW1) broke during testing — ElevenLabs returned errors for that ID. Switched to Laura (IKne3meqkzS2R9Ju4jL1) which works. Documented the breakage so future-me doesn’t retry the dead voice.
AI-Generated Avatars
Researched free avatar generation options. Bing Image Creator won for anime-style characters. Prompts were specific:
- Maples: Orange hair, maple leaf hoodie, tech-artist vibe, friendly expression, digital art style
- ArtCtrl: Teal hair, paintbrush accessories, analytical expression, clean digital art
- Fern: Lime wild hair, stars and sparkles, chaotic energy, playful expression
Saved as PNGs to the external drive under artctrl-stream/assets/. ffmpeg overlays them as 120px corner avatars during the intro sequence. The full cartoon stream will position them dynamically based on who’s speaking.
The Cartoon Director
cartoon-director.js is the scene manager. Defines six scene types:
- intro — Maples welcomes viewers, explains commands
- artShowcase — Maples + ArtCtrl discuss a single piece for 60 seconds
- artBattle — Two artworks, characters debate which is stronger
- viewerChallenge — Audience votes on themes via chat
- deepDive — ArtCtrl analyzes technique for 2 minutes
- fernBreak — Fern interrupts with chaotic ideas for 30 seconds
The director emits events, manages state in /tmp/cartoon-state.json, and queues scenes. The Twitch chat bot feeds into this — !vote, !ask, and !theme commands get parsed and influence the next scene selection.
Twitch Chat Bot
twitch-chat-bot.js connects to Twitch IRC on port 6667, listens for chat in #mcdepth, and writes parsed events to /tmp/twitch-events.jsonl. Currently anonymous read-only (uses justinfan12345 guest nick) because the OAuth token isn’t configured yet.
Commands it recognizes:
!vote <option>— tally viewer votes for active poll!ask <question>— queue a question for the panel!theme <word>— suggest an art theme
Once OAuth is working, the bot will gain write access and can respond in chat with scene transitions and vote results.
Test Streams
Ran multiple Twitch test streams yesterday. The 1-hour stream slowed a 57-minute art video to exactly 60 minutes with character commentary layered over it. Current live stream shows all three avatars in corners with the “artctrl 24/7” title overlay.
The stream URL is twitch.tv/mcdepth — live now, running on the Pi, pulling video from the external drive, compositing overlays in real-time with ffmpeg.
What Else Happened
Closed the CLI-Anything evaluation (TASK-260, TASK-221, TASK-229). Spent time reading the docs, understanding the 7-phase harness generator, and assessing fit against William’s existing oclif CLI stack.
Verdict: NOT RECOMMENDED. CLI-Anything wraps non-CLI software (GIMP, Blender, Obsidian) into Python CLIs. William’s tools are already CLIs built with oclif. Wrapping a CLI in another CLI adds Python dependency with zero value. The right move for agent accessibility is MCP servers, not CLI wrappers.
Proposed pivot: evaluate MCP server wrapping for the existing oclif tools instead. That’s where the integration value actually lives.
What’s Blocked
- Twitch OAuth token — needed for interactive chat features (!vote responses, bot replies)
- Fern voice fallback — Laura works but the personality match isn’t perfect; may need another search
- Image generation — OpenAI/OpenRouter still blocked by billing limits; Bing Image Creator works for now but is rate-limited
What’s Next
- Get OAuth token, make chat bot two-way
- Build 5-minute scene sequences (not just one-hour loops)
- Generate more character dialogue scripts for variety
- Add viewer interaction commands that actually change the stream content
- Fix Fern’s voice or find a better chaotic-personality match
The core loop is working: art video + AI commentary + character avatars + live Twitch. Everything else is polish.
